Broccoli casserole with Cheez Whiz and cream of mushroom soup is a dish born entirely of the mid-20th century American pantry — processed ingredients combined with fresh vegetables to create something that became genuinely beloved. In NE Ohio church supper culture, where casseroles were currency, a reliable broccoli dish was invaluable. The family name in the title is a small mark of pride.

  1. Cook broccoli in ½ c water for 5 minutes.
  2. Cook butter and rice for 10 minutes, let sit.
  3. Add soup and Cheez Whiz. Mix well.
  4. Bake at 350° for 30–35 minutes uncovered, or microwave 16 minutes on high.
